From Urchin Barrens to Trophic Recovery: Two New Studies on Kelp Forest Resilience

I’m excited to share two complementary studies examining why sea urchin barrens can persist and how targeted restoration can restart the flow of energy through degraded kelp forest ecosystems.
In Ecological Applications, we show that red sea urchins are remarkably resilient to food limitation. Urchins living in barrens suppress their metabolism yet remain ready to resume feeding when algae return. In controlled experiments, food rapidly restored their metabolism, lipid reserves, and reproductive condition. Diet quality mattered as much as quantity: urchins fed diverse algal diets converted food into gonadal tissue almost three times more efficiently than those fed a single kelp species. These traits help explain how urchins can survive prolonged scarcity and continue suppressing kelp recovery, a physiological feedback that reinforces persistent barren states.
Our companion study in the Journal of Applied Ecology follows that mechanism into the field. Working with the Council of the Haida Nation, Parks Canada, and other partners through the Chiix̱uu Tll iinasdll—Nurturing Seafood to Grow restoration initiative in Gwaii Haanas, we evaluated what happened after targeted urchin removals released kelp from grazing pressure. Bull kelp increased dramatically, remaining urchins rebuilt their gonads, and northern abalone showed improved condition. Fatty-acid biomarkers also revealed renewed transfer of kelp-derived nutrition into both species, with particularly strong benefits in deeper habitats that had previously been barren.
Together, the studies connect mechanism with management. The first explains why urchin barrens resist recovery; the second demonstrates how restoration can interrupt that feedback and rebuild not only kelp abundance, but also food quality, consumer health, and trophic function. They also highlight fatty-acid biomarkers as a promising tool for detecting ecological recovery before changes become obvious through conventional population surveys alone.
